About the Exhibition

"I Am a Man" is a historic slogan used by Black sanitation workers in the 1968 Memphis, Tennessee strike to demand dignity, respect, and civil rights. Signs featuring this declaration, represented a refusal to be overlooked, stemming from the broader fight against inequality. Black men today continue to carry this weight imposed on them by society, while existing with dignity and a silent vulnerability. Societal commentary and stereotypical expectations often miss the nuances that persist within the Black community. These 13 fine artists are creatives using differing practices and materials to share their perspectives and feelings as they exist as respective artistic, dignified, self aware, Black men.
