I AM A MAN
A Group Exhibition Honoring the Humanity, Dignity & Vulnerability of Black Men
Curated by Darlene Delores
The 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike gave us a historic slogan: “I Am a Man.” Black men carried these signs to demand dignity, respect, and civil rights. They refused to be overlooked in a fight against inequality and dangerous working conditions.
Today, Black men continue to carry a similar weight imposed by society, while existing with dignity and a silent vulnerability. Societal commentary and stereotypical expectations often miss the nuances that persist within the Black community. These 11 fine artists – male creatives of African descent – use differing practices and materials to share their perspectives and feelings. They exist as artistic, dignified, self‑aware Black men.
